How to Help Your Landscaping Survive the Houston Heat

Houston summers are no joke. With temperatures regularly soaring above 95°F and little relief from the intense sun, maintaining healthy flowerbeds and landscaping can feel like an uphill battle. But with the right approach, your outdoor spaces can stay vibrant and resilient—even in the thick of the heat.

1. Choose Heat-Tolerant Plants

Start with the right foundation. Native and drought-resistant plants like lantana, salvia, black-eyed susans, and ornamental grasses are built to withstand Houston’s climate. These varieties not only require less water, but they also hold up better against extreme temperatures and humidity.

2. Water Smart, Not Just Often

Daily watering isn’t always the answer. Deep, infrequent watering (2–3 times per week) encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more drought-tolerant. Water early in the morning—before 9 a.m.—to reduce evaporation and allow plants to absorb moisture efficiently.

3. Compost is Your Best Friend

A 2–3 inch layer of compost adds nutrients to your landscaping, helps regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. Amending the soil with organic compost gives beneficial microbes a chance to thrive, interacting with your plants roots in a symbiotic relationship that helps your plants to thrive. As we often say, we don’t grow plants— the soil does.

4. Organic Non-Dyed Mulch is Also a Win

Another option is Organic mulches like pine bark or shredded hardwood. They help to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Mulch doesn’t add nutrients to the soil, but it’s a less expensive option and over time Organic mulch will break down, enriching the soil with some nutrients.

5. Don’t Over-Fertilize

Excess fertilizer in the Summer can stress plants and lead to burned roots. If fertilizing is necessary, opt for a slow-release organic formula like Microlife brand and follow label directions carefully.

6. Monitor and Adjust

Walk your landscape weekly. Look for signs of stress such as wilting, yellowing leaves, or dry or boggy soil. Adjust watering schedules or provide temporary shade for delicate plants as needed.
